In the five years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast region, ELCA members, such as these 2009 Youth Gathering volunteers who painted murals in New Orleans under Highway 610, have been active in the rebuilding effort.

Lutherans Remember Hurricane Katrina

ELCA congregations had an opportunity to mark the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina during Sunday worship Aug. 29, the day Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005.

Lutherans also remembered the more than 50,000 Lutheran volunteers who traveled to the Gulf Coast to help their neighbors in need.

Presiding Bishop to Visit China

ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson will visit China Aug. 28-Sept. 5. The Rev. Gao Feng, president of the China Christian Council in Shanghai, invited Hanson and others from ELCA Global Mission.

The ELCA group will visit sustainable development programs as well as the relief and rehabilitation work done in response to the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan.

Flooding in Pakistan Continues 

Nearly 1,500 people have died and more than 15 million people have been affected by severe monsoon flooding in Pakistan.

The ELCA has committed $100,000 in response to widespread flooding in Pakistan through Church World Service. Initial efforts by Church World Service have provided food and shelter kits, and emergency health assistance.
